Frequent Apple IOS Updates are Creating a Stir Amid Hacking Concerns

apple security warning

Less than a week after Apple released the 18.1.1 urgent security update for iOS devices it offering a free software update for some of its devices. What is going on with Apple? Is there something for users to be concerned about? There certainly is a stir on social media and this makes my “spidey” senses activate.

The first warning was issued to address critical vulnerabilities that could allow unauthorized access from hackers to your personal information. The warning was so widespread that companies issued warnings to its employees, citing that corporate emails were being targeted by an excessive amount of phishing scams.

This increase in bizarre email behaviour was being blamed indirectly on the IOS vulnerability. Companies use Apple devices because of the level of security they offer and this news is unsettling.

Employees were reminded to be aware of phishing scams and to update personal devices, prompting many people to become concerned. “It made the threat seem more real, when it came from headquarters” said Carly Richer, who is responsible for the Envoy Login Applications that guests use on numerous IPads in her small Boutique Hotel. We received notices saying that threat actors or hackers, such as SilkSpecter, are sending emails and ads promoting unbelievable deals (example: 80-90% off on new book releases) to lure shoppers to fraudulent websites. These sites often mimic legitimate brands like Barnes and Noble but may have unusual domain endings like “.shop” or “.vip” instead of “.com.” For example, a site like “amazonblackfriday[.]shop” may appear authentic but is not affiliated with Amazon.

Not even a week later, Apple is again announcing that users should update to its newest free software update 18.2 according to Forbes Magazine.  Should Apple device users be concerned that a software update is being released so quickly after a hacker alert was issued? Apple has released no warnings or cited any particular reason for the push towards the new update. It is focusing on the fact that it is the latest and greatest free update instead. Whatever the case, if you want to secure your devices you should at least install the 18.1.1 update for the time being.

Here is how to install the update:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select Software update.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the update.

Tis the season for hacking! Stay safe this holiday season by updating all your devices. This applies to all Android devices as well. Here are some tips to ensure your devices remain safe.

  • Verify URLs: Always check the website’s URL for legitimacy. Be cautious of unfamiliar domain endings.
  • Use credit cards: Use credit cards when shopping online, as they often offer fraud protection, minimizing direct impact on your bank account.
  • Be skeptical of unrealistic deals: if an offer seems too good to be true, it likely is. Research the retailer and the deal before making a purchase.

Your vigilance is crucial in protecting data. Stay alert, stay informed and always be concerned about the security of your devices. If you purchase a new device such as a Kindle, Tablet, Phone or Notebook always download the latest security updates before using it  Add virus protection when possible and for book and game lovers who download often, be sure to only download from reputable sites like Google Play, Rakuten, Barnes and Noble. A discount is not a good deal if a hacker gets access to your electronic device.
